One Gigabyte Equals Six Hours

May 29, 2007

My biggest pet peeve is slow Internet. I probably sound just like the next guy who complains, but now my biggest complaint is going to be the grudgingly slow upload speeds allowed by Internet Service Providers.

Forget the wireless stuff; I am talking about standard wired Ethernet connected directly into the computer. Volatile download speeds are suffice and are always something to complain about. However, my biggest complaint has to be data upload speeds.

Different types of uploaders have different types of restrictions. Some are limited to quantity, while others are limited to a total collective capacity. Of the various uploaders offered by SmugMug to upload pictures into their website, I am forced to use their Java-based version, since it is the most versatile of the offerings. Then, the bottleneck becomes my ISP’s upload connection.

It takes approximately 6.5 hours to grudgingly upload 1 Gigabyte of data. I am depressed at my lack of productivity because of this. It’s not like I can do other stuff, as it drains the Internet connection. What needs to happen to get better upload?

Getting better upload will not happen overnight. The service providers do this because they don’t want people running full blown game servers out of their bedroom, as it will hinder their ability to provide service. Of course, you can do this but there are limitations, especially on servers that experience high traffic patterns.

For now, all I can do is complain and add this to my pet peeve list in life. I hope one day I can take it off though.
